What employers usually expect
| Skill | Level | How to prove it |
|---|---|---|
| Testing fundamentals | Must have | Write test cases, report bugs clearly, and explain severity versus priority. |
| SDLC, STLC and Agile | Must have | Know where testing fits in a sprint and how a bug moves through its life cycle. |
| SQL basics | Must have | Check data in a database with simple queries. |
| API testing (Postman) | Must have | Send requests, check responses and write assertions. |
| Bug tracking (Jira) | Must have | Create and manage tickets with steps to reproduce. |
| Test automation (Selenium or Playwright) | Strong plus | Automate checks with a programming language and a clean structure. |
| Git | Strong plus | Keep automation code in a repository. |
Where college often leaves a gap
- Courses cover testing definitions, levels and techniques such as boundary value analysis, but usually not much hands-on testing of a real product.
- Students seldom write real bug reports or build an automation framework.
- API testing and tools like Postman and Jira are often missing from the syllabus.
Courses differ between colleges. Use this as a checklist against your own syllabus, not as a judgement of it.
12-week plan
Assumes about 10 hours a week. Move the checkpoints if you have exams.
Manual testing and SQL
- Learn the test life cycle, techniques for designing test cases, and what a good bug report contains.
- Test a public demo website: write test cases and report bugs in a spreadsheet.
- Learn basic SQL: SELECT, WHERE, JOIN and GROUP BY.
API testing and basic programming
- Learn Postman: requests, variables, assertions and collections.
- Learn one language used for automation (Python, Java or JavaScript) at a basic level.
- Practise Jira workflows with a free account.
Automation and portfolio
- Learn Selenium or Playwright, locators, waits and the page object pattern.
- Build a small automation framework with reports and run it on every push.
- Put your test documents and code on GitHub and update your resume.
Three projects that prove it
1. Test a real website
Pick a public demo shop. Write 40 test cases covering login, search, cart and checkout, and report at least 10 bugs.
2. API test collection
Create a Postman collection for a public API with environment variables and assertions.
3. Automation framework
Automate 15 checks with Selenium or Playwright using the page object pattern, with HTML reports.
Change the dataset, the idea or the features so the project is yours. Interviewers can tell a copied tutorial in two questions.
What interviewers often ask
- Write test cases for a login page, an ATM or a lift.
- Severity versus priority, with an example of each combination.
- Smoke, sanity and regression testing: the difference.
- The bug life cycle, and what you do when a developer says it is not a bug.
- Automation: locators, implicit versus explicit waits, and which tests you would not automate.
Common mistakes
- Vague bug reports with no steps to reproduce.
- Listing Selenium without being able to write a script.
- Treating testing as clicking around, with no test design.
