Fresher resume format for 2026: layout, fonts, file type and a full sample

The practical side of a fresher resume: margins, fonts, length, PDF or Word, how to name the file, and a complete sample you can copy.

Most advice about freshers' resumes is about what to write. This guide is about how the page should look and how to send it. A clean format will not get you a job on its own, but a messy one can get a good resume skipped in the first few seconds. Everything below is simple enough to do in Word, Google Docs or the Kareersathee resume builder.

Length: one page, and mean it

A fresher has one page of material at most. A second page that holds three lines of hobbies makes the resume look padded. If you are at a page and a half, cut the weakest bullets, not the margins. Two pages are normal only after several years of work.

Layout: one column, plain headings

Use a single column with clear section headings in a fixed order: Header, Summary, Skills, Projects or Internships, Education, Extras. Two-column templates with sidebars, skill bars, icons and photo frames look attractive but often break when a recruiting system reads the file, so text can come out jumbled or missing. A plain one-column page is read correctly by people and software alike.

  • Margins: about 1.5 to 2 cm on every side. Below 1 cm the page looks crowded and may be cut off by a printer.
  • Fonts: one family only. Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, Garamond and Cambria are safe. Body text at 10.5 to 11 pt, headings at 12 to 14 pt, your name at 18 to 22 pt.
  • Spacing: a small gap between sections and none between bullets in the same entry. White space helps, but large gaps waste the one page you have.
  • Emphasis: bold for job titles, project names and section headings. Avoid underlines, italics everywhere, and more than one colour. If you add a colour, use a single dark one for headings and keep the rest black.

Photo, date of birth and personal details

For most private-sector jobs in India you do not need a photo, your father's name, marital status, religion or a full home address. City and state are enough. A photo can even work against you, because some employers avoid anything that could look like bias. Add a photo only if a specific application asks for it. Government and some campus forms have their own formats, so follow those exactly when they apply.

PDF or Word?

Send a PDF unless the employer asks for Word. A PDF keeps your layout the same on every phone and computer, and modern recruiting systems read text-based PDFs well. Make sure it is a text PDF: if you can select and copy the words, it is fine. A PDF made from a photo or scan is just an image, and software cannot read it. Send a Word file only when the job post says so, or when a recruiter asks to edit it.

Name the file properly

Recruiters download many files. A file called "resume final 2 (1).pdf" is easy to lose. Use Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf, or add the role: Priya-Sharma-Data-Analyst.pdf. Keep it short, with no brackets or random numbers.

Links that work

Write your LinkedIn or GitHub link in full or as a short clean address, and click every link in the finished PDF to confirm it opens. A dead link or a private profile is worse than no link. If a project has a live demo, put that link next to the project, not in a long list at the bottom.

A complete sample (text you can adapt)

The example below is for an invented final-year student. Replace everything with your own facts; do not copy the numbers.

A last check before you send

  1. Read the whole page aloud once. You will catch typos your eyes skip.
  2. Open the PDF on your phone. Most recruiters look at it there first.
  3. Select and copy some text from the PDF to confirm it is real text.
  4. Check that dates, spelling of your own name, phone number and email are right.

You can also run the file through the free resume check on this site, which looks at sections, skills, length and contact details. Your file is processed in memory and never stored.

Try it on your own resume Free, no sign-up, and your file is never stored.
